Since the open waters aren’t inhabited, there is minimal risk of harm from debris in the event of a launch failure.Īs demand for satellites and space exploration grows, the number of launch locations will continue to grow as well. Islands and coastal areas are also common locations for launch sites. Low altitude launch locations near the equator are the most desirable, as far less energy is required to take a spacecraft from surface level to an equatorial, geostationary orbit. Europe’s Spaceport has been operating in French Guiana since 1968. Europe’s ambitions for space are actually launched from the Guiana Space Centre in South America. One interesting quirk of the map above is the lack of spaceports in Europe. The site recorded its first successful launch in 2016. Wenchang Space Launch Site, on the island of Hainan, is China’s newest launch location. Now numerous countries have the ability to launch satellites, and many more are getting in on the action. The global roster of spaceports has grown immensely since Baikonur and Cape Canaveral were the only game in town. The latter was NASA’s primary base of operations and the first lunar-landing flight was launched from there in 1969. The former was constructed as the base of operations for the Soviet space program and was the launch point for Earth’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1. Two of the most famous launch sites on the list are the Baikonur Cosmodrome (Kazakhstan) and Cape Canaveral (United States). There are currently three active drone ships-one based near Los Angeles, and the other two based at Port Canaveral, Florida. The list above covers fixed locations, and does not include SpaceX’s autonomous spaceport drone ships. Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching StationĮditor’s note: The above table includes all sites that are operational, as well as under construction, as of publishing date. Though the graphic above is a detailed list of many types of rocket launch sites, we’ll focus on major sites that are sending satellites and passengers into sub-orbit, orbit, and beyond. In orbital spaceflight, a spacecraft remains in space for at least one orbit. ℹ️ In sub-orbital spaceflight, a spacecraft reaches outer space, but it doesn’t complete an orbital revolution or reach escape velocity. The wheat, barley, and grass seeds from the Aleppo bank are thought to have important traits resistant to drought, which researchers think could be increasingly important in the face of climate change. In 2015, war-torn Syria was the first country to withdraw seeds from the vault in order to replace those lost in Aleppo due to the ongoing civil conflict. Already Handy Onceĭespite remaining a pragmatic backup plan for the worst case global scenarios, the Doomsday Vault has already come in handy just a few years into its existence. This minimizes metabolic activity, which means that the seed vault will likely be able to preserve seeds for most major crops for thousands of years. Today’s infographic, from Futurism, has more on this Doomsday Vault that could one day help to save civilization:Ĭarved 390 ft (120 m) into a sandstone mountain in a Norwegian archipelago, the vault keeps the temperature of seeds well below freezing while also limiting humidity. Officially called the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, it already holds close to a million samples of crops around the world, with each sample holding about 500 seeds. On a remote island that is just 800 miles (1,300 km) from the North Pole, the Norwegian government has built a failsafe in the freezing cold that protects thousands of the most vital crops from extinction. Well, besides the fact that the world’s cities have been replaced by smoking craters, there is some good news for the humans that survive a potentially apocalyptic scenario. ![]() Will everything be lost?
